Dieter Rams

Dieter Rams began his career with Braun in 1955, initially as architect and interior designer. Dieter Rams was responsible for product design at Braun until 1995.

His first concrete designs for furniture systems were created in 1957 - for instance, the Table Program 570 (double tabletop table) and the assembly system 571. The furniture designs of Dieter Rams did not only reveal analogies to the hi-fi devices he designed, some of them were even aligned to them to the very millimetre. The Shelving System 606 was launched in 1960 and is still being produced today. Further designs such as the Lounge Chair Program 620 and the modular Low Table Program 010 followed.

The work of Dieter Rams can be summarised best by his 10 design propositions:

1. Good design is innovative.

2. Good design makes a product understandable.

3. Good design is elegant.

4. Good design makes a product useful.

5. Good design is unobtrusive.

6. Good design is honest.

7. Good design is long living.

8. Good design is consequent right to the very last detail.

9. Good design is friendly to the environment.

10. Good design is as little design as possible.
